If you’ve been following my blog for a while, then you know how much I love shopping at Dollar Tree. Mostly I love to buy items to make my own home decor items. It’s fun taking something cheap and turning it into something that looks somewhat expensive.
However, I like to buy a few other items from Dollar Tree from time to time to save money. I decided to put together a list of the best items to buy at Dollar Tree for you to help you save, too!
Another perk of shopping at Dollar Tree is that you can now shop online and have items shipped to your local store for free. This is great if you’re looking for something you can’t find in the store.
Also, if you want to buy something in bulk, such as school supplies or organizing bins, you can purchase a bunch of these online and have them shipped to your home.

Best Items to Buy at Dollar Tree
Household Items
Foil Pans
Foil pans are perfect for potlucks and cookouts. You don’t have to worry about getting your dish back or washing it when you get home. They’re also great for taking food to those who are ill or disabled and for new parents. That way they don’t have to cook or worry about washing your dish and returning it!
Spray Bottles
I love to make my own homemade cleaners and Dollar Tree spray bottles are perfect for this. They come in different colors for color coding and they’re good quality. My Dollar Tree spray bottles have lasted way longer than my husband’s spray bottles that he gets from the hardware store. (And his are NOT $1!)
Plastic Bins
Plastic bins are probably my favorite household items to buy at Dollar Tree. They are perfect for organizing every room in your home. They work great in drawers, closets, pantries, garages, etc. I love using the pencil bins in my bathroom to hold my toothpaste and toothbrush because they fit perfectly in my drawers side-by-side. The small rectangle bins are great for holding my makeup and hair clips and scrunchies. Bigger bins are great for cabinet organization and the plastic shoe boxes work well for holding small toys, essential oils, garage and basement items, and so much more!
Nightlights
Surprisingly, Dollar Tree nightlights hold up really well and seem to last quite a long time. You can’t beat that for only a dollar!
Picture Frames
These are perfect if you plan to do a large gallery wall and don’t want to spend a fortune on frames. Some of their picture frames look expensive and are really good quality. They are also great for turning into your own home decor items!

Glass Vases and Decorative Bowls
Glass vases can cost you $3 or more at other stores. But you can buy them at Dollar Tree for only $1 and they are the same quality as the more expensive vases. Plus, you can paint them in any color you want or leave them clear for flowers, candles, holiday scenes, or whatever you want to put in them.

Some Kitchenware
Dollar Tree carries Betty Crocker items, which are pretty sturdy and durable. You can get a set of measuring spoons at Dollar Tree for only $1 while the same set at Walmart will cost you around $7.
Their dinner plates are durable and similar in quality to more expensive plates from other stores, such as Target. Silverware and drinking glasses are also nice items to buy at Dollar Tree.
Gardening Supplies
You can find gardening supplies such as trowels, gloves, and even planters for cheap at Dollar Tree, and they are made well, too. You can also find seed starter pods and seeds for just $1!
Classroom Supplies
Classroom supplies are perfect for both teachers and homeschoolers. Look for educational decor, learning tools supplies, and much more!
Books
Sometimes you can find best sellers at Dollar Tree. They also have a great stock of kids’ books and coloring books for both kids and adults.
Pet Supplies
Be sure to look for collars leashes, harnesses, grooming tools, toys, and cleanup essentials. Skip the food and treats, though.
Makeup
Dollar Tree carries brand-name makeup such as e.l.f., L.A. Colors, and Wet ‘N Wild. Also, their makeup brushes and tools are worth purchasing as well.
Small Toys
Small-size toys are perfect for Easter basket fillers, stocking stuffers, prizes, and more!
Bread
Usually, the bread at Dollar Tree is day-old bread from grocery stores. It’s perfect if you are going to use it right away or freeze it for later. It can also be used as bread crumbs in recipes.
Celebrations & Seasonal Items to buy at Dollar Tree
Seasonal & Holiday Items
Summer toys, especially water toys, are perfect items to buy at Dollar Tree. Usually, these items get lost or thrown away at the end of the season. For holiday items, look for stocking stuffers, Easter basket fillers, as well as items to stuff in a gift basket.
Wrapping Paper & Gift Bags
These are disposable items, making them some of the best items to buy at Dollar Tree. They are perfect for birthday and holiday gifts, plus wrapping paper makes great backdrops for photoshoots. They have a nice selection of both solid and geometric prints as well as character and themed paper. Keep in mind that Dollar Tree wrapping paper is short rolls with not a lot of paper on each roll. If you’re wrapping a lot of gifts, it may be best to shop elsewhere.
Inflated Balloons
Mylar balloons can cost you anywhere between $3-$4 at stores and sometimes you have to pay extra to get them inflated. Dollar Tree carries them already inflated for only $1. Just don’t make the mistake of letting them blow away once you walk out the door. (Been there, done that!)
Party Supplies
If you’re having a party, head to Dollar Tree for cheap party supplies. They’re perfect for any type of party, even themed parties such as graduation parties, weddings, birthdays, etc. Dollar Tree even carries certain characters and themes. If you’re having a themed party that includes characters Dollar Tree doesn’t have, consider mixing in their solid colors to keep costs low. Purchase the disposable party supplies at Dollar Tree, such as table cloths, cups, plates, etc.
Greeting Cards
There’s no sense in paying $3 – $5 for a greeting card when Dollar Tree carries cards for only $1. And they’re just as good if not better than higher-priced greeting cards.

Very helpful! I’ll have to keep these things in mind. 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing! 😀
Thank you! I’m glad you found it helpful! 🙂
The best makeup item I ever found at Dollar Tree was Baby Lips lip gloss. I haven’t been able to find it since, but these things sell for $6 each at Walmart. Everything at Dollar Tree here costs $1.25, and I always try to buy brand names at dollar stores if I can ?
I’ve never seen that lip gloss brand here. I think that’s the biggest issue I have with Dollar Tree – things are always changing out. For some things that’s good, but it always seems to happen just when you find something you love. 🙂
I think it’s an American brand. It’s by Maybeline (I think). Baby Lips are popular here and are known to be expensive. It’s up there with EOS but I have yet to see EOS in dollar stores here. I definitely recommend brand names which are a steal if you come across them at Dollar Tree! ?
I definitely buy my greeting cards there. They have very nice ones. I bought several the other day and they only cost .50 each. That’s amazing! I also love their wrapping paper, bows, etc. After our bathroom remodel is done, I’ll be checking out those storage bins like you showed. Great idea!
Yes, Dollar Tree is the best place to get greeting cards. It’s crazy how much they cost other places. I’m so glad your bathroom remodel is done! I know that’s a huge relief. Now you get to have fun decorating and organizing it! 😀
Well, it’s not done yet but we’re getting closer ??
Yay!!
Thanks, Michelle. I like plastic bins too. An organized life reduces stress levels.
And, there is nothing like the joy of saving money. ?
The plastic bins are great at keeping things organized on a budget. I agree with saving money! 😀
I love browsing at the Dollar Tree and I always find something. This is a great list Michelle. xoxo
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it. You never know what surprises you’ll find at Dollar Tree. 🙂
I had no idea they carried bread! I have a dollar tree near me. But I don’t go in there much because I am afraid of buying things just because they are cheap. Lol. So I especially appreciate this list because it can help me to shop with intention. Thank you for sharing! ?
Haha! I know the struggle! Now I only go in there for specific items and force myself not to look around. ? I’m glad you found this helpful!
Over here in the UK we call them the pound shop. And they sound very similar. I love them, and they are perfect for when I am shopping with my 5year old, as I can let her choose ONE thing without breaking the bank!
I used to do the same thing when my daughter was little. She always got a fun toy and if it broke later on I wasn’t too upset about it because it wasn’t like it was super expensive. 🙂
My faves are gift wrapping and I save lots of money buying greeting cards there.
Those are both great things to buy at Dollar Tree to save money. And I think the greeting cards have better sayings than the most expensive ones, too. Thank you for reading! 🙂
Greeting cards are my absolute favorite! At .50 a piece it sure beats the $3-$5 at other stores!
I agree! Plus the sayings are much better than the more expensive cards I think.
I don’t know about Dollar Tree, but in our British equivalent Poundland it’s definitely worth buying cleaning and laundry supplies. I’d stay away from makeup though – Poundland sells big brand outlet makeup for £1 and I recently got tempted by a Rimmel blush. Opened it when I got home (it was in a plastic packaging in the shop) and saw a huge mark from someone sticking their finger in it! Ew!
Eeeww! I definitely wouldn’t buy makeup supplies there any more! You really have to watch what you’re getting from some of these places. That’s good that cleaning and laundry supplies are cheaper there. Here it’s cheaper to buy the bigger sizes elsewhere, unless you only need a small bottle of course. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
Dollar Tree/Dollar General is usually my go-to for greeting cards!! Great item ideas!!
They have the best cards at the best prices! ?
Great list! Full disclosure: I’ve actually never bought anything from Dollar Tree before because I simply don’t have one around me. Some of my very good friends, however, love shopping there.
Thanks! Well I wouldn’t say it’s worth driving out of your way for. ? It’s nice if you have one close, though.
So many people have talked about it that I’m super curious!
I am so glad you posted this! A few dollar stores around me had closed and instead we have 5 Below so this made me google nearest dollar store and it’s only 10 minutes away. I need the decorative things for cheap! xo
That’s great that you have one so close! I’m not a fan of our 5 Below. They never have anything and now some things are above $5. Enjoy your Dollar Tree shopping!
Great list! I need to make a trip there and I will remember this post!
Thank you! I’m glad you found it helpful!
Good deals are hard to find today, even at dollar stores.
