My post is late today because it’s been such a busy week already!
But more on that on Saturday. I don’t want to spoil the surprise.
Today, I wanted to share with you how I made faux vintage wall decor to dress up my poor bare wall at the bottom of the steps.
If you’ve been following along with my blog for a while, you’ll know how much I enjoy saving money on home decor, yet still having a welcoming and cozy home. Home decor, especially wall decor, can get pretty expensive. However, to save money I like to make my own pieces.
And that’s where Dollar Tree comes in! A lot of stuff I use in my home decor and wall decor DIYs comes from Dollar Tree.
So let’s get started with today’s fun Dollar Tree DIY – faux vintage wall decor!

How to Make Your Own Faux Vintage Wall Decor
What you need:
- 2 oval silver trays
- 2 rectangle silver trays
- Drawer liner paper
- Printer paper
- Scissors or utility knife
- Pencil
- Command strips or ribbon for hanging
What you do:
Step 1 – Rectangle Tray
Lay a piece of paper on the tray push it down slightly along the edges of the inside of the tray. Use a pencil to trace around the inside part of the tray. I found it easier to use printer paper since it was unlined, but any paper will work.
After you have the inside of the tray traced, cut it out. This creates a template you can use to trace onto the drawer liner.
Lay the template on the back of the drawer liner and trace around it, then cut it out. You’ll need 2 of these.
I started to cut the drawer liner with a utility knife, but I found that it ripped easily. Scissors seemed to work much better.
Step 2
Lay the drawer liner on the silver tray and position it so that it’s centered. After it’s placed the way you want it, slowly peel the back off while using a plastic scraper to push out any bubbles. (Credit cards work, too!)
Step 3 – Oval Tray
I did the oval tray a little differently. This time instead of outlining the tray from the inside, I outlined it from the back. I also found this to be so much easier for a round tray.
Lay the paper flat down on the back of the oval tray, then gently push the sides down all around the edges. You can see the outline of the tray and you don’t even have to pick up your pencil!
Cut out the oval template and trace it onto the drawer liner just like you did for the rectangle tray. You’ll need two of these.
Step 4
Position the drawer liner onto the center of the tray and follow the steps above.
Step 5
Now it’s time to hang your beautiful faux vintage wall decor.
You can use hot glue to glue jute twine to the back for hanging or use a pretty white or ivory-colored ribbon.
I chose to hang mine with command strips right now because I didn’t want to put any more nail holes in the wall. And since I’m always changing my mind and redecorating, this is the best option for me.
I love the way my faux vintage wall decor turned out. It looks like it was meant to go on that wall! Later, I may try antiquing or aging the silver trays more, but for now I kind of like the silver.
Besides being a super easy and quick Dollar Tree DIY, this faux vintage wall decor project only cost me $5 to make! So it’s also a super frugal project.
What do you think? Do you see your walls sporting some faux vintage wall decor?
