Saturdays on the Porch
Welcome to the porch! Let’s chat!
What a busy week!
A few weeks ago the piece on the back of my car that opens the trunk broke, so I haven’t been able to get my trunk open. Luckily I can put my back seats down so I can get bigger things in and out of my car. I wasn’t able to get an appointment to have it fixed until Wednesday, and of course, the dealership is an hour away. The only reason for having it repaired at the dealership is because my car is still under warranty so it won’t cost anything to have it fixed.
Meanwhile, both keyfobs to my car start messing up, too. Fortunately, it happened before I had to take my car in, so they could see what was going on with that, too. Unfortunately, when I get to the dealership, they tell me it sounds like an issue with the computer so they had to keep my car overnight. It’s a good thing we have an extra vehicle, otherwise, I’d be stuck! Of course, they don’t call to let us know the car is ready until late Thursday, which means we couldn’t pick it up until Friday. But they can’t fix my trunk because the piece that needs to be ordered won’t come in for 40 days. And he has no idea why. What???
While we were out there, we went to pick up some things we needed for repairing our other house (which we’re still working on, too). We passed by a car wash that has been there for years and always seemed to be super busy. The roof on the front of the building was torn up and the back of the building was smashed in by rocks. Apparently, a mudslide hit the building back in January and destroyed it. It was deemed a total loss. Luckily there were no injuries.
After picking up the materials we needed, we grabbed lunch at Firehouse Subs (my favorite sub place!) and then grabbed a box of cupcakes at a place called Bubblecake. The cupcakes are huge! They also have babycakes, which are smaller. But if you’re going to a place like that for the first time, you just have to get the big ones.
I got 2 cupcakes – Bake Sale Brownie and Carrot Cake. I haven’t tried the carrot yet, but the Bake Sale Brownie is so good! It tastes exactly like a frosted brownie. However, I have to say that it’s not my favorite. There’s a small cupcake shop next to where we used to live that has the best Strawberry Shortcake cupcakes. She puts the cream inside the cupcakes, which is delicious! She also makes the most beautiful (and delicious!) cakes.
After lunch and cupcakes, we went to our other house to get some more work done. (If you’re new here and would like to see our home renovation updates, click here.) A while back, our roof leaked causing water to damage the ceiling in the dining room area. And I’m not just talking about a little damage. Eventually, the ceiling just broke!
So this past weekend, my husband cut that part of the ceiling out and used some leftover drywall to repair the hole. He also added a box so we can put a light there. Before we just had a lamp in the corner. Having a light over the table will be so much better!
Now we just have to patch that up, clean and paint the ceiling, and add a light!
Over the weekend, I painted one of the bedrooms and prepped another bedroom to be painted this weekend. Things are moving along quicker now, thank goodness. Instead of selling, we are considering renting it out. Have you ever rented out a home before? If so, do you have any tips or advice? We’ve done a ton of research, but it’s still nice to hear from actual people if that makes sense.
What’s on the menu this week:
- Monday: Pancakes and Eggs
- Tuesday: Baked Potato Casserole; Cucumber Slices; Watermelon
- Wednesday: Burger King
- Thursday: Spaghetti; Small Salad
- Friday: Ham Crescent Rolls; Fries; Green Beans
- Saturday: Out
- Sunday: Viola; Breadsticks
Dessert: Cupcakes
Positive Story of the Week
The animal shelter from my hometown had a room full of cats. There were so many that they couldn’t accept any more and were afraid some of them would have to be euthanized, something they never want to do. They held an adoption event and every single cat was adopted! How amazing!!
Fun Photo of the Week
When I went to wake my daughter up Wednesday morning, I noticed there was a huge bug on the top of her bedpost. Once I got closer, I realized it was a Praying Mantis.
Of course, she wasn’t too fond of that thing staring at her while she was sleeping, but I thought it was pretty cool. My daughter had a check-up appointment last Friday and her doctor came into the room a little later than usual. She apologized and said that it was because she had to give a patient an emergency Covid test. (I don’t know why it was an emergency test.) Ever since that day, my daughter has been so scared she is going to get Covid.
So seeing the Praying Mantis praying over her while she slept gave me peace of mind that she’s going to be okay. Even if some people think “it’s just a bug”.

Oh, my dear! I think you can, at least, be proud to be a professional housemaker family! ? Have a nice weekend.??
Aww, thank you!! I hope you have a wonderful weekend! ❤️
You too, my dear. ??
Aw, praying mantises are cool! Keeping the bug population down inside your house. Natural pest control! And, holy cow, those are some big cupcakes. They look more like muffins!
Maybe we should have kept it as a pet! ? I thought they looked like muffins, too! I had to eat it with a fork because it was so big. Haha!
Sounds like a neat pet, I agree!
Pest control helps to reduce the bugs in the house. Totally awesome work you done in this post Michelle. ?
Thank you so much!! ❤️
You’ve had a busy, busy week! Those cupcakes sound so good! Enjoy the weekend! X
They were delicious!! Thank you!!
You are holding up well. You’re good. You should relax completely over the weekend and charge at all works for the coming week. ???sip sip, don’t forget the coffee with the cupcakes. I am enjoying a medium roast myself.
Thank you so much! I did manage to rest this week so I’m feeling a little better. And of course I have my coffee. That makes everything better. I prefer medium roast, too! ?
Oh my gosh I had a run-in with a Praying Mantis this week too! It was hanging out on our back door, and it wouldn’t leave. So I very gently pushed it along with a broom. It was so cool to look at! (Wouldn’t want it near my bed either!)
How crazy is that? I haven’t seen one in the longest time. I guess it wanted to come in and get warm. ?
I think it was only my second time seeing one in the flesh, and it was fascinating. Such an amazing-looking little creature!
Wow. That was a busy week. And those cupcakes look AMAZING!!!!
They were delicious!! ?
Wow you sure had a busy week. I love hearing about what you’ve been up to. It’s like we are sitting down together for lunch. And I do wish I was with you for lunch when you stopped at the cupcake place! They sure looked and sounded yummy. ?
Aww thank you! I’m glad you enjoy these posts! Lunch with you would be fun! And yes, we’d definitely get cupcakes. Haha! Have a a great weekend! ❤️
Michelle, you have had a lot going on. Cupcakes should make everything better ?
They definitely helped! ?
What a week 🙂 those cup cakes look so good 🙂 I think I read someplace that cup cakes make everything better 🙂
have a wonderful day xoxo
I think what you read is true! Haha! Thank you! I hope you have a great weekend! ?
What a bit of serendipity, having a bug praying for her. ??
Wasn’t that so sweet? ❤️
You had a very busy week. Always nice to sit down and jot all your accomplishments listed out. Your husband did a great patch job on the ceiling. Those cupcakes looks so good I want one now!
That’s true. Sometimes I feel like I didn’t get much done, but to see it written out makes me realize it was more than I thought!
Those cupcakes were delicious! ?
Aren’t vehicle repairs fun?! LOL! We had a fuel pump replaced on our truck and suddenly it takes an hour to fill the gas tank. When we asked why we were told we needed a new gas tank ($3,000) Funny. It worked just fine before they did whatever they did. On another note those cupcakes look AMAZING! I totally want a big glob of frosting right now! HAHA! P.S. Franklin County ROCKS! Yay for saving all the kitties!!!
Ugh! How terrible! And I’m 100% positive they do that on purpose. My husband had to take his car in a while back for something and then the speedometer quit working. It was totally unrelated to the other problem! Haha!
Those cupcakes were good! Especially the brownie one. ❤️
The oddest items turn up with supply chain issues these days. I hope it all gets resolved and you get notified in a timely manner.
I just have to ask the rhetorical question: what are we doing to our children by installing such fear of a disease that has a 99.99% survival rate for children (who also have a very small chance of contracting it)? This is not an accusation for you as a parent, but an indictment of our society that is bombarding our children with messages of fear and doom.
I agree! I never would have thought something like a car part would take so long.
I know exactly what you mean. We’re trying to show our daughter that it’s ok to do things as long as you do it safely, as with any virus. We don’t watch the news because all they do is talk about it. However, she sees bits and pieces online and hears things from her friends, so it’s hard to make her understand the true facts sometimes. I just wish people (the media) would stop talking about it daily!
Your response to the craziness is wise. Parents need to step in and moderate the messages. Great parenting on your part.
I hope your car is good to go soon!! Maybe the cupcakes made it worth it???
So thankful the cats were adopted like that, crazy!!? love the idea of the praying mantis praying over your daughter.?
Take care and make time to slow down!❤️
Haha! Yes, the cupcakes made the waiting worth it! ? Thank you! I took this week off and made myself do nothing! Well, except clean and cook, of course. Us moms never get a day off from that. Lol!
Good for you to get a bit of ‘rest’ in!!❤️
Sorry you needed to wait for a part for your car. This seems to be the daily message with so many orders of things. Those gourmet cupcakes look delicious. There is a shop nearby which serves something similar. While I haven’t checked them out yet, I did taste some when I visited Montana back in June. Scrumptious!
Yes, it seems like everything is behind and it’s mainly due to people not working. It’s sad. I bet those cupcakes were good! ?
always something for everyone, love it.
Thank you!! 🙂
You two are so good with house renovations ?? and I’m sure there’s always a lot of work!
I would not be pleased either having that mantis on my bed either ?? but maybe is a good sign ?
Those cupcakes looks delicious though ?
Aww, thank you! I actually really enjoy doing it, too! 🙂 It was cool to see the pray mantis, but I agree. I sure wouldn’t want to wake up to it on my bed! lol!
Amen Sweet Sister in Jesus Michelle!! GOD BLESS You and Your Family and Friends in JESUS!!
Love Always and Shalom, YSIC \o/
Kristi Ann
Thank you for your blessings! Many blessings to you as well!
Those cupcakes are awesome!
As for renting a house? Um….I don’t want to be a downer but my parents did this and had some horrible experiences. One lady let her dogs poop all in the house, especially one room, then she and her boyfriend took off to N.C. with the dogs and left all their stuff in the house and refused to come get it. They had trashed the house (which was already old, granted) and when Dad tried to get ahold of them they dodged him for months. He had to spend hundred of dollars to have all their stuff thrown out in a dumpster and then had to clean out the house, pay people to help him do it, and then redo part of the house they had damaged. It was a nightmare.
So if you do it, make sure you do it legally. Have contracts, leases, anything you can take to a lawyer if they try to do something to the house or rip you off, etc. And be prepared that even with the legal things in place they can take off and never have to pay for it.
How horrible!! Thank you for sharing that and for the advice. We have started looking into an LLC and how to be legal. I doubt I would allow any pets. Especially after that story! Lol
Good idea!
Busy week 😀
Yes, very! ?
Oh Michelle what a week! I sure you had more then one cupcake!
Haha! You know me so well!
Hey Michelle! As you can see, I’m late to the party. Crazy days, right?!? Sorry about that! I do love reading these updates from you. It feels like a couple of friends catching up on the happenings of life. It’s refreshing how you write these posts. 😊
It sounds like your old house is really coming along. How’s the renting research coming along? Are you still leaning that direction? Renting definitely has its perks, like monthly income once a home is paid off. But there are definitely a lot of things to consider like having a nest egg for any sudden repairs, pricing it right so that you get a good renter who won’t tear your property up, etc. Whatever you two decide to do – I hope it’s exactly the right choice for your family. Some real estate lawyers can help in matters like these too.
Sorry to hear about the nightmare with your car. Yikes! Talk about a bad streak all at once. I had a car that had issues with the computer so your symptoms sounded familiar. I am grateful to hear warranty will take care of it for you. That mess gets expensive!
I smiled SO wide from your good news of the week. Wow — way to go Franklin County. That’s amazing! Hopefully every cat that was adopted is now in a home where it’s a happy ending for all. ❤️
Sending so much love your way, my friend. I hadn’t forgotten about you! I hope you and your family are well? Oh! And thanks for sharing those cupcakes. They looked yummy.
I’m just as late! HAHA! I know exactly what you mean about crazy days. There’s just so much going on! I say we just pack up and head to the mountains for a weekend. lol! We talked to our real estate agent and he was very helpful at pointing us in the right direction. We’ve done tons of research on renting out a home, so that’s the way we’re going right now. It’s exciting, but scary at the same time! We’ll definitely be screening possible tenants, too. After all the work we’ve done to the house I would be so mad if someone messed it up.
I hope you are doing well!! Don’t forget to take a breath and relax! Hugs and love to you!
I miss your writings. I hope all is well. Praying for you.
Aww thank you! It’s been so busy I haven’t had a chance to even open my laptop. Thank you so much for your much needed prayers!! I appreciate them so much! 🤗
Absolutely, it’s my pleasure.
