Learn how to create a beautiful rustic Valentine’s frame out of a thrift store picture frame.
Last weekend was a horrible weekend for me. Leroy, my Shih Tzu, passed away early Saturday morning, which was his 11th birthday.
He got sick the weekend before, throwing up for 2 days straight. We took him to the vet, but they couldn’t find anything wrong. The vet said, “Sometimes they just don’t feel good.”
I cannot describe the pain I feel over losing Leroy. I’m sure all you fur mamas understand what I mean. I was his human. Everywhere I went, Leroy was right behind me. If I left the house without him, he was the only one super happy to see me when I returned. He just made my life complete.
Now let me move on to today’s DIY before I start ugly crying again like I did all weekend.

A few years ago, my mom and I were at a thrift sale held by a local church, and I came across this old rustic picture frame.
Immediately I fell in love with the rustic wooden frame. The tin piece inside? Not so much. But since the frame was less than a dollar I knew I could remove that tin piece.
I have to say, though, that whoever took the time to create that picture in the tin did a really good job. That takes a lot of patience. I’ve done something similar by using a nail and hammer to punch holes in an old soup can. It’s a little time consuming and I only created a few holes!
Let me show you how I turned this thrifted frame into a rustic Valentine’s frame.
On the backside of the frame, you can see that there are just old nails holding the tin piece in.
I carefully pulled the nails back and removed the tin. A few of the nails did break because they were so old.
Next, I laid the tin piece on the fabric and cut around it leaving about 2″ all the way around.
This works the same way for the backing of any type of frame.
After that, I placed the tin covered in fabric back into the wooden frame. I pulled the fabric tight and pushed the nails back down to hold it in place.
After making sure the fabric of the rustic Valentine’s frame was pulled tight and looked good, I printed out the XOXO printable on brown Kraft paper.
I was going to age white paper with tea, but I didn’t have time to go through all that. I’ll just save that idea for another project later.
I ripped all the edges of the Kraft paper to give it a more worn look.
Last, I placed the XOXO printable in the center of the frame and then placed small pieces of masking tape on each end to keep it in place.
To me, the masking tape just made it look all the more rustic.
Decorate! The rustic Valentine’s frame is all complete so it’s time to find a place for it.
Will you be making a rustic Valentine’s frame soon?

Thank you. I've missed him so much this week. I keep thinking I want another one, but then I don't want to go through the pain of losing it again. So for now I'll just stick with my crazy annoying cats. haha!
Thanks for the much needed hugs!
When my labradors passed, I was I wanted no pets.
Then the kitties came and I have six. Not easy saying goodbye Mich, I feel your pain.
I'm sorry to hear about Leroy! I know exactly how you feel, because what you describe is how I felt when my toy poodle had to be put down. To this day, it is the worst day of my life.
I also think it's odd that my vet said something similar as my dog's health declined. She asked me how he got this bad :-/
Anywho...sending you a virtual hug.
Thank you! I'm so sorry about your poodle. It's so hard to have to let them go.
That is weird! It's almost as if the vets just want a paycheck nowadays.
Thank you for the much-needed hug! Hugs back!
