Farmhouse Candle Holders

I upcylced two candle holders from a thrift store using homemade chalk paint to make these beautiful farmhouse candle holders!

Last week I shared my thoughts on using a homemade chalk paint recipe that I found on Pinterest. So today I thought I would share with you exactly what I painted using that recipe.

I found these old candle holders at a thrift sale last year while shopping with my mom.

As you can see they were rather dirty, but luckily they didn’t have any candle wax stuck to them anywhere. I cleaned them up a bit with a vinegar and water solution and they looked good as new.

After the candle holders were all clean and dry I started painting them with the homemade chalk paint.

The picture above shows the candle holders after one coat of paint. I gave them both two coats of paint, letting them dry a while in between coats. It didn’t take them very long to dry at all, which was a plus.

Mason jar lids were used for the tops of the candle holders. I wanted to use bigger candles instead of taper candles for this project. Not to mention the holes for the candles to go in were so tiny that even the emergency taper candles from Dollar Tree wouldn’t fit inside and they are pretty tiny.

I painted the mason jar lids with the homemade chalk paint as well.

Just a little word of advice: don’t do this! I had the hardest time painting mason jar lids with this chalk paint recipe. It took forever to dry and kept coming off. I almost gave up and spray painted them, but I really wanted to stick to the entire project being painted with the chalk paint.

I attached the painted mason jar lids to the top of the candle holders with hot glue. After the glue was dry, I sanded over random spots on the lids and candle holders with sandpaper.

While I’m not too thrilled with the chalk paint recipe, I did like how these farmhouse candle holders finally turned out.

From further away they actually look pretty good. After a few days of sitting on my shelf, I started liking them more and the way they turned out.
