Continuing on with the clutter-free series, this weekend we will tackle the kitchen clutter. (If you’re new to the series be sure to check out how to have a clutter-free bathroom and bedroom posts and grab your free checklists!)

Clutter in the kitchen can be absolutely overwhelming. We spend a lot of time in our kitchens and not a day goes by that the kitchen does not get used.

The phrase “the kitchen is the heart of the home” comes to mind whenever I think about the kitchen. The kitchen is where we cook, have coffee, grab snacks, gather with family and friends, help our kids with homework, and enjoy delicious meals. Since it’s one of the most used rooms in the home, it’s only natural that clutter will eventually take over.

Having a clutter-free kitchen will make it a lot easier to find exactly what you are looking for, saving you a lot of time. As I’ve said before, clutter can be overwhelming, but the declutter process doesn’t have to be!

This is part one of my clutter-free home series. To grab the checklists that go along with this series, click on the image below.

How to Have a Clutter-Free Kitchen Quickly

Cabinets

  • Take everything out of the cabinets
  • Wipe the shelves clean
  • Go through all of your containers and match the lids with them. If lids are missing or containers are missing put them in the donate pile. If they are badly stained or cracked toss them. (Glass containers are a healthier option and less likely to stain)
  • Toss any expired spices, condiments, and food items
  • Start putting things back in the cabinets in an order: pans with pans, food with food, dishes with dishes, and so on
  • Stack pans on top of each other or invest in a wire kitchen organizer
  • Sort through the dishes and get rid of any broken ones. Organize dishes with similar items together (glasses with glasses, plates with plates, etc.)
  • Get rid of packaging to save space. I use small folding baskets to keep fruit snacks, snack cakes, crackers, and candy in

Drawers

  • Take everything out of your drawers
  • Wipe the drawers clean and add new liners if you need or want to
  • Sort through utensils and get rid of any old broken pieces. I had a lot of the same utensils so I donated the ones I rarely used
  • Place the utensils back in the drawers with similar items (cooking utensils together, eating utensils together, etc.)
  • Sort through the kitchen linens and cloths and toss any that are dingy and gross; place them back in the drawer neatly

Counter Tops

  • Clear everything off the counter tops
  • Wipe clean
  • Only put the items you use daily on your counter tops. For example, I do not use the electric can opener very often since most of the cans have lids with pull tops, so I tuck it away in a cabinet. The only items on my counter tops is a bowl of fruit, coffee maker, toaster, and dog biscuits in a container. (I have a very small kitchen!)

Refrigerator and Freezer

  • Sort and toss expired food
  • Wipe the shelves and drawers clean
  • Put similar items together. I put the condiments in the door together, the sodas together, etc. I have 3 drawers in my refrigerator and one is for vegetables, one is for cheeses, and one is for meats. It’s just easiest for us to keep these items in drawers together this way.
  • Use plastic refrigerator bins to keep sandwich meats and cheeses in

Under the Sink

  • Take everything out
  • Wipe clean
  • Throw out any broken dishes, trash, or expired cleaning products
  • Add wire shelves to stack items on to save space
  • I keep cookie sheets and pans under my sink and stack them with a wire pan organizer
  • If you keep cleaning supplies under the sink, put them together in a container to keep them organized

Kitchen Organizing Hacks

  • Over-the-door wire baskets are great for storing container lids
  • Have an over the door wire basket for aluminum foil and plastic wrap, too
  • Store dishwasher tablets in a large glass jar with a lid to save space and keep them under the sink
  • Use refrigerator bins to store towels and sponges under the sink
  • Hang a towel rod on the wall under a cabinet and use S hooks to hang measuring cups and spoons on
  • Use a Lazy Susan for spices

Homework

    • Thank you! That was my biggest clutter issue, too. Sometimes I have no idea where the lids go! :)

  • This makes me laugh because we, too, have a very white kitchen. When you did your post about the toothbrushes and cleaning, I went after some darkened crevices on the cabinets I thought were worn paint. Turns out they were just dirt... Our kitchen is almost blinding at the moment. :)

    • :D That's awesome! My husband painted the office not too long ago and got paint splatters all over the floor and it drives me crazy! I wish it was just dirt! haha

  • I agree with you Michelle, Clutter is overwhelming task but the process should not be overwhelming at all. I love how you have broken down everything in steps. Awesome tips and thank you for the free checklist.

  • Great post Michelle! We recently did a kitchen declutter, which is amazing. But slowly yet surely the crap will start to seep back in, I just know it! It’s the same thing as with the coat closet, oh dear!

    • I know the feeling! I try so hard not to let it happen and then I turn around and it's like everything exploded! :D

  • Great checklist, Michelle! I need to re-do all of my kitchen drawers since we have been living here in the new house for just over 6 months. I think I now know the workflow of this kitchen layout and I need to make a few changes.

    • Thank you! I keep changing things around in my kitchen until it works right for me. My husband keeps getting confused. ?

  • Great post Michelle, I really enjoy this series! I need to tackle my kitchen cupboards next though I hate the thought. I think I may have found the problem, seems wordpress did something so I was no longer following you. Sigh, I hope it's fixed now anyway! Enjoy your evening and God bless!
