Continuing on with the clutter-free series, this weekend we will tackle the kitchen clutter. (If you’re new to the series be sure to check out how to have a clutter-free bathroom and bedroom posts and grab your free checklists!)
Clutter in the kitchen can be absolutely overwhelming. We spend a lot of time in our kitchens and not a day goes by that the kitchen does not get used.
The phrase “the kitchen is the heart of the home” comes to mind whenever I think about the kitchen. The kitchen is where we cook, have coffee, grab snacks, gather with family and friends, help our kids with homework, and enjoy delicious meals. Since it’s one of the most used rooms in the home, it’s only natural that clutter will eventually take over.
Having a clutter-free kitchen will make it a lot easier to find exactly what you are looking for, saving you a lot of time. As I’ve said before, clutter can be overwhelming, but the declutter process doesn’t have to be!

How to Have a Clutter-Free Kitchen Quickly
Cabinets
Take everything out of the cabinets
Wipe the shelves clean
Go through all of your containers and match the lids with them. If lids are missing or containers are missing put them in the donate pile. If they are badly stained or cracked toss them. (Glass containers are a healthier option and less likely to stain)
Toss any expired spices, condiments, and food items
Start putting things back in the cabinets in an order: pans with pans, food with food, dishes with dishes, and so on
Sort through the dishes and get rid of any broken ones. Organize dishes with similar items together (glasses with glasses, plates with plates, etc.)
Get rid of packaging to save space. I use small folding baskets to keep fruit snacks, snack cakes, crackers, and candy in
Drawers
Take everything out of your drawers
Wipe the drawers clean and add new liners if you need or want to
Sort through utensils and get rid of any old broken pieces. I had a lot of the same utensils so I donated the ones I rarely used
Place the utensils back in the drawers with similar items (cooking utensils together, eating utensils together, etc.)
Sort through the kitchen linens and cloths and toss any that are dingy and gross; place them back in the drawer neatly
Counter Tops
Clear everything off the counter tops
Wipe clean
Only put the items you use daily on your counter tops. For example, I do not use the electric can opener very often since most of the cans have lids with pull tops, so I tuck it away in a cabinet. The only items on my counter tops is a bowl of fruit, coffee maker, toaster, and dog biscuits in a container. (I have a very small kitchen!)
Refrigerator and Freezer
Sort and toss expired food
Wipe the shelves and drawers clean
Put similar items together. I put the condiments in the door together, the sodas together, etc. I have 3 drawers in my refrigerator and one is for vegetables, one is for cheeses, and one is for meats. It’s just easiest for us to keep these items in drawers together this way.
