Painted Wood Blocks with Words Easter DIY

Painted books have become very popular lately, but I just can’t bring myself to paint a book. That’s why I created these cute little painted wood blocks with words instead! Read on to see how I made them and how I use them in my Easter decor.

When I was a little girl my grandma used to sing the “Here Comes Peter Cottontail” song around Easter time.

We would walk barefoot through the grass, across the backyard and around my granddaddy’s big beautiful garden full of vegetables. She would carry a bucket of leftovers that we would throw over the fence to the neighbor’s two horses.

On the way back to the house I would skip along while she sang:

Here comes Peter Cottontail
Hoppin’ down the bunny trail
Hippity hoppin’, Easter’s on it’s way!

It always made me smile!

And every year around this time I think of her singing “Here Comes Petercottontail” while walking barefoot across the soft grass to feed the leftovers to the horses.

I’m sure you’ve seen the very popular painted books with words that everyone is making now for their farmhouse decor. I love the look and think they are so pretty, however, I just cannot bring myself to paint a book! No matter how old the book or even if it’s from Dollar Tree, I just cannot do it.

Maybe one day I’ll be able to. But not today.

And since I cannot bring myself to paint a book, but want the look, I decided to make these cute little painted wood blocks with words instead.

These painted wood blocks take up less space than books, too, which is great if you lack the space for a lot of decor like I do.

Painted Wood Blocks with Words

These painted wood blocks are so simple to make and they don’t take a lot of time, either.

My husband cut the wood blocks for me from scrap wood. They are about the same size as Jinga blocks, so you can use those instead if you have some.

Also, Dollar Tree has some similar wood blocks that would be perfect for this project if you can find them. There’s 36 blocks in there for only $1! (See them here.)

What you need:

• 3 wood blocks
• White craft paint
• Sandpaper
• Rubber stamps with letters

What you do:

Make sure your wood blocks are clean and free of dust and/or debris, especially if you cut the blocks yourself.

Give the wood blocks a coat of white paint. I only did one coat because I wasn’t going for a fully painted look. I wanted the grain to show through a little. Set them aside and let them dry completely.

After your wood blocks are dry, lightly sand around all the edges.

Next, add your words to the wood blocks with the rubber stamps, or you can write them yourself. I am not quite that talented, though.

The trick that helps me get the words on the blocks in somewhat of an organized order is to start backward. I write the words on a piece of paper first so I don’t misspell anything and have to start over. Then I start with the last letter of the word and add it to the end of the block, following each letter backward.

I didn’t take a picture of this step, so I hope it makes sense. If not, feel free to ask me any questions.

That’s it! These painted wood blocks with words turned out so good!

I decorated them in different ways until I finally found a way I really liked.

First, I placed them in my basket vignette with my fabric-covered plastic Easter eggs.

Then I tried them stacked on the side of the tobacco basket. This didn’t work too well because they kept falling off every time someone touched the kitchen table.

Finally, I decided to tie a piece of jute string around one end with a little bow and sit them in a little grapevine chair I bought at a thrift sale last year.
