Whenever I go to the grocery store, I love to go down the laundry detergent aisle. There’s just something so refreshing about all of those fresh scents mixing together. It almost makes me want to rush home and do laundry. (Notice I said almost.)

The only problem with store-bought laundry scent boosters is that they are full of artificial fragrances and ingredients. And their only purpose is to add scent to your laundry.

That’s why I decided to make my own laundry scent booster. It’s free of artificial fragrances and there are no weird ingredients. Also, it is all-natural and super easy to make. Not to mention it’s cheap to make and you can add your own personal scent!

This laundry scent booster DIY leaves your clothes smelling like you just stepped out of a luxury spa! But you can personalize it to make it your own. I’ll include some essential oil combos to give you some inspiration.

What you need:

Why these ingredients?

Epsom salt dissolves completely in water and helps soften clothes.

Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and cleanser and it softens the water. Also, it helps to regulate the pH level when rinsing by keeping it from being too alkaline or acidic.

Essential oils are known for their antifungal, antimicrobial, antibacterial, deodorizing, and cleaning properties. All of these make them perfect for laundry use!

Eucalyptus oil has a refreshing, clean, fresh scent.

Lavender oil has a calming and relaxing scent.

What you do:

In a small bowl or measuring cup, mix all the ingredients together. Let them air dry for a while before adding them to an airtight container. (I like to use a mason jar.)

To use: Add 2 tablespoons (or 6 teaspoons) to your washing machine before adding clothes. Use your normal laundry detergent and wash as usual.

Other essential oils that are great for the laundry

Tea tree: Fights against mold and mildew. It’s also great for immune support. Tea tree is perfect for cleaning laundry after someone has been sick. If you accidentally leave a load in the washer too long, add a few drops of tea tree essential oil and rewash. It removes that moldy, mildew scent.

Citrus oils: Lemon, orange, grapefruit, bergamot, and mandarin work great at cleaning dirt and grime as well as deodorizing. They also offer a fresh, clean, uplifting scent to your laundry.

Peppermint: Offers an energizing, fresh scent. Also works great in the laundry due to its antiviral, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties.

Lemongrass: Offers a soothing, comforting scent.

Rosemary: Helps disinfect and boost immunity because it has antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties.

Basil: Fresh, crisp scent. Pairs really well with lemon.
