These cute hymnal page candles are so easy to make! All you need is an old hymnal and a battery-powered tealight candle!
Last week I shared with you my farmhouse candle holders that I made using my homemade chalk paint. And I promised you I’d show you how to make the candles.
These hymnal page candles are so easy to make! It will work with any type of book page, too. I think it would look really cool with a map, too. Maybe use a map from your favorite vacation place?
Anyway, let me show you how I made these hymnal page candles. Watch out for the crazy fail during all of this.

When my mom was packing up her stuff last year before they moved, she came across an old hymnal in her box of books. When she gave it to me all these memories came flooding back.
As a child, my step-sister and I used to play school with that hymnal. We would assign each stuffed animal “student” a song and they would have to sing it for a grade.
I was flipping through the pages of the hymnal and inside we had written each “student’s” name next to their song. We even had a concert! Those were the good old days.
I tore a page out of the hymnal and wrapped it around the tealight to see if it fit. It was just right, but there was only a slight bit of overlap so I had to tape the edges together.
The next thing I did was burn the top end of the paper because I love that old rustic look.
Here’s where the fail comes.
I burned the paper that was already taped together first. BIG mistake. That thing flamed up quickly and I could barely put the flame out! Then I had ashes all over my sink and kitchen counter. Learn from me and don’t do that. (At least I was smart enough to hold it over the sink, though!)
The best way to burn the edges of your paper is to keep the paper straight and not folded. This works so much better and you can control the flame more.
After the page had burned down to the length I wanted, I wrapped it around the tealight candle and taped the edges together. Then I placed them on the candle holders.
See how I made the candle holders here!
That’s all there is to it!
Hymnal page candles are so easy to make. And they’re so pretty when they’re lit at night.

Beautiful! And what a great personal gift - you can use the recipient's favorite hymns. :)
Thank you! Using a personal hymn as a gift is a wonderful idea!!
These are so fantastic, Michelle and I can't believe how easy they are to make too. I love it that you guys had your stuffed animals singing in a concert. That is awesome. Hugs, CoCo
Thank you so much! We had a lot of fun when we were little - way back before computers and cell phones. :) I hope you have a wonderful day!
I love this idea Michelle and memories you shared. If I were going to burn the edges of the paper I might try moistening the part that I didn't want burned by using a spray bottle with water.
Thank you so much!
That's such a great tip. I'll keep that in mind next time. Thank you for sharing that with me! :)
