Fall decor is popping up everywhere, even though the temperatures here are not exactly screaming fall. We’ve been having some pretty hot and humid days here in Virginia, which is unusual for this time of year. I’m hoping the temperatures will be falling soon and the humidity goes away altogether.

However, I’m not exactly looking forward to a long winter full of lots of snow, either, so I guess I should just stop complaining, huh?

My mom and I took a road trip to Meadows of Dan last weekend to attend a Folk Festival event. We stopped at a Lavender Farm along the way, which was suggested to me by my friend Holly at catcaresolutions.com. I fell in love with that little shop at the top of the mountain!

Going up to the mountains always gets me in the mood for fall. Maybe it’s the cooler temperatures, I don’t know. All I know is that I really didn’t want to come home. I felt like I belonged up there, if that makes any sense.

While at the Folk Festival there were quite a few vendors who had some handmade fall items they were selling. This always gets me in the mood to come home and pull out my fall crafting supplies. And that’s exactly what I did!

Well, not on the weekend because I was sick, but first thing Monday morning when I was feeling a little better. So let me show you the cute little Pumpkin Pie fall decor piece I made.

What you need

Materials needed for the pumpkin pie fall decor

(The first 5 items came from Dollar Tree and the rest were items I already had on hand.)

What you do

Step 1 – Sand

Sand the picture frame.

The frame I purchased from Dollar Tree was plastic, so I sanded it just to scuff it up a little bit. This helps the spray paint hold to the plastic better. After sanding it all over, wipe it off with a clean cloth.

Step 2 – Paint

Spray paint the frame

After sanding the frame and wiping all the dust off, give the frame a nice coat of spray paint. I used white, but any color you chose is fine. It only took me one coat. I left it outside to dry, but it was taking too long because it was so humid. I ended up bringing my spray painted frame inside and it dried much faster.

Step 3 – Mod Podge

Mod Podge the fabric for the pumpkin pie fall decor

While the frame was drying I used the sponge brush and Mod Podge to “glue” the fabric to the back of the picture frame piece. I laid my fabric down and put the frame backing on top of it and cut around the frame.

Cut the fabric

After my piece was cut out, I put the Mod Podge all over the frame backing with the sponge brush. I let that dry, then I put another layer of Mod Podge over the fabric, focusing on the ends so the frayed pieces would not come off.

Step 4 – Adding the decorations

While the Mod Podge was drying, I gathered the decorations I was going to use to add to my frame. For the “sign” part, I cut the words “Pumpkin Pie” from a piece of scrapbook paper I had bought several years ago. I didn’t want to put this directly on the fabric because I wanted it to stand out more. Finally I decided to cut a piece from a brown paper bag and then tear the edges off to give it a more aged look.

Using the Mod Podge and the sponge brush, I Mod Podged the brown paper bag piece to the fabric. After that dried I Mod Podged the words “pumpkin pie” to the brown paper bag piece and finished up by adding another layer of Mod Podge over the whole area.

With the jute string, I made a tiny bow and hot glued it to the bottom of the pumpkin stem on the wooden pumpkin sticker. The wooden pumpkin stickers have glue dots on the back, but I took that off because it didn’t seem to stick too well to the fabric.

Using hot glue, I glued the pumpkin to the bottom of the frame backing and added some Spanish moss to the bottom of the pumpkin.

Step 5 – Put the frame back together.

After everything was dry, I put the frame back together, minus the glass piece.

This is such a super simple and cheap fall decor piece!
