Hurricane Candle Holder – Dollar Tree DIY

This cute hurricane candle holder was made using only items from Dollar Tree!

If you have been following my blog for a while you’ll know I’m a tad addicted to Dollar Tree. I love buying things from there and putting them together to make them look like decor pieces you would find at a high-end store. My home is decorated with items I’ve made using mostly things from Dollar Tree.

Which is exactly what I did to make this cute little hurricane candle holder.

Not only does this hurricane candle holder go great with fall decor, but you can also make it your own and add any embellishments for any season or holiday.

I’ll show you how to make the hurricane candle holder as well as the grubby candle. It’s all very easy, but the candle takes a little bit of time because of the drying process. Grunging a candle to make it look primitive is also very messy so cover your craft area before you begin.

What You Need:

*Except for the E6000 and spray paint, all of my materials came from Dollar Tree. This project cost me around $5 to make.

What you do:

  • Spray paint the candle holder white (or whatever color you choose.) After it dries, use the E6000 Adhesive to glue the vase on top of the candle holder.
  • While that’s drying, make the candle. Grunge them up with cinnamon, instant coffee, and Mod Podge. (Instructions below)

How to Grunge a Candle

  • To make the grunginess (is that a word?), mix some cinnamon and coffee grounds together. Then cover the battery-powered taper candle in Mod Podge and roll it around in a mixture of coffee and cinnamon. Let it dry.

There are different ways to do this out there on Pinterest, but this is easiest for me. Plus the cinnamon makes it smell good!

  • After it dries, add another layer of the Mod Podge and coffee cinnamon mixture to the candle and let it dry. Keep adding until it looks like you want it to, then finish it up with a layer of Mod Podge to seal it. I only did two coats and I was happy with the way they came out.

Beware: it gets messy!!

Finally:

  • I glued some twine around the top of the candle holder and added a tiny sunflower. I put the finished candle inside and added some moss to the bottom.

I love the way it turned out!!

I think this hurricane candle holder is so cute for a cheap fall DIY. It doesn’t have to be limited to fall, though. Make it for any time of the year! Best of all it cost under $10 to make and you still have plenty of supplies left over to make a lot more candles.
