To me, August is the month that wraps up summer. All the laziness has come to an end and things are starting to get back to a routine. Most kids start back to school in August, so the school shopping lists need to be checked off. August shopping isn’t just for school supplies, though. Check out this August shopping guide on the best things to buy in August to save some money!

Tax Free Items

Not all, but most states hold tax free holidays in August. Ours is coming up this weekend so I’ll be taking advantage and stocking up on paper, notebooks, and pencils all while not paying any taxes. Tax free holidays are a great time to stock up on not only school supplies, but clothing and office supplies as well.

See if your state offers tax free holidays and when here.

Back to School Supplies

Walmart has some of the best deals on back to school supplies. You can get a pack of 24 Crayola crayons for as low as $.25 and notebooks are usually about $.17! You can’t go wrong with those prices. Plus shop during the tax free days and you’ll save even more. Even if you don’t need these things for kids going back to school, you can stock up on items to use in your office. Office Depot has back packs on sale for $10 right now while supplies last.

Stores are pushing their sales on college kids during the month of August and linens are needed for the dorms. Target is a great place to get linens right now because you can save up to $10 on bedding with code COLLEGE plus get free shipping when you spend $35 or more online. JC Penney is having a great sale on dorm accessories right now, too. So stock up on the bedding during August or wait until January when most department stores have “white sales.”

Summer Clothing

One of the best things to buy in August is summer clothing. Stores are trying to get the clothing off the shelves so they can stock the fall clothing that keeps piling in. Old Navy is having a huge sale on kids clothing right now! Leggings and graphic tees are only $4 and you can find jeans for only $8! We used to shop at Old Navy every year and rack up the great deals on clothes for the kids.

While Black Friday is usually the best time to get laptops at a great price, August comes in second. Best Buy is having a great sale on laptops this month and so is Dell. Dell’s sale on laptops ends very soon, but they have laptops starting at $130! You can’t beat that deal! Check out HP as well to save on laptops and printers.

Outdoor Furniture

Patio furniture and outdoor rugs are great things to buy in August because the stores are trying to get rid of them as fall approaches. Lowe’s is having a clearance sale right now on select patio furniture and outdoor decor saving you up to 75% off the retail price. They have this adorable 5′ x 7′ striped rug for only $34!

Swimsuits, Beach Towels, and Pool Toys

Even though summer is coming to an end, the temperatures can still be pretty high even going into fall. August is the month that swimsuits, beach towels and pool toys get big discounts so stores can clear shelves for back to school supplies. Even sunscreen gets a major discount, so stock up because technically you’re supposed to be wearing it year round.

August is the time to stock up groceries such as granola bars, cereals, fruit cups, pudding cups, fruit snacks, and crackers. These are great for school lunches and after school snacks. It’s also a great month to find in-season fruits and vegetables. Look for these seasonal items during your next grocery shopping trip to save money.

  • Strawberries
  • Figs
  • Cherries
  • Blueberries
  • Blackberries
  • Apricots
  • Plums
  • Peaches

  • Bell peppers
  • Corn on the cob
  • Cucumbers
  • Radishes
  • Zucchini
  • Beets
  • Eggplant

What do you stock up on in August? Do you have a list of the best things to buy in August that save you money?
