I have been trying to get rid of almost all of the store bought cleaning products in my home for years. My daughter was diagnosed with asthma when she was about 5 years old so she couldn’t have any harsh chemical smells around her.

Many of the cleaning supplies I have used in the past have caused major irritation to my throat and eyes, especially bleach. Some cleaning supplies have chemicals in them that have been known to cause cancer, and I would really love to keep that out of my house!

Over the years I have researched how to use natural homemade cleaning supplies. There are so many recipes for household cleaners, but I finally found the ones that work best for me. I also make my own carpet freshener, which makes my house smell so good!

I am sharing three natural cleaning supplies recipes with you today – all-purpose spray, mold and mildew remover, and carpet freshener.

All-Purpose Spray

Grab your farmhouse style cleaning cloth at my store!

This all purpose spray works amazing! It is one of my favorite natural cleaning supplies because I can use it on everything and I only have one bottle to carry though the house with me while cleaning. It works great on kitchen counters as well as in the bathroom. I even use this to clean my mirrors for a streak-free shine! There is no film left on the mirror from the essential oils I use in the spray.

Ingredients

Distilled White Vinegar
Water
Essential oils (I use lemon and tea tree)

Instructions

Add equal parts water and vinegar to a spray bottle. (I use 1 cup water and 1 cup vinegar.) Add 10-15 drops of each oil. Use less if the smell is too strong for you, use more if you want the smell to be stronger.

Mold and Mildew Spray

To use this as a mold and mildew spray, make exactly like the all-purpose spray, just leave out the water.

  • Vinegar is a natural acid that kills most mold spores and can also keep them from returning.
  • Since mold is a fungus, the tea tree essential oil works as a powerful antifungal that kills mold and mildew.
  • The lemon essential oil a powerful cleaner in that it is an antiseptic, antiviral, antifungal, and antimicrobial.

Natural Carpet Freshener

Ingredients

1-2 cups Baking soda
Essential oil (I use lavender)

Instructions

Pour baking soda in a small bowl, add 8-10 drops essential oil and stir to mix together. Pour mixture into a container with holes on the top for easy access. Sprinkle on your carpet and let sit for about 15 minutes, then vacuum as normal.

Tip: Parmesan cheese containers work well for this! I purchased a glass container from Dollar Tree to use for my carpet freshener.

  • These are great, thank you Michelle! I try to avoid using harmful cleaning products, and vinegar is really great for a lott of things, isn't it? :-)

    • Thank you so much!! I love to use vinegar! I have to scent it with essential oils because my daughter can't stand the smell of vinegar. To me it smells clean. :D

      • I too think it smells clean! But I quite like essential oils as well, so don't really mind either :-)

  • I was just given a box of different essential oils, now I know what to use them for.. thanks for sharing this.
